VODKA MUSEUM

If you happen to be in Moscow and keen to learn everything about vodka, just head for the Vodka Museum and your wishes will be fulfilled. Not only will you glean all the facts you could ever wish to know about Russia's national drink, but you can also observe the distillation process and sample many varieties of the brew.

Formerly in St Petersburg since 2002, the Vodka Museum was transferred from to Moscow in 2007.

The Moscow museum showcases many special versions of vodka, including some bottles produced over two centuries ago. In total you can admire a display of over 50000 vodka bottles of various sizes ranging from shkalik (or kosushka) to shtof and quarter. The tour de force is the bottle produced at the Kronshtadt table wine distillery in 1862.

The museum shows how important vodka was to all aspects of Russia life. For example, a part of the collection illustrates how frontline soldiers in the Great Patriotic War received daily rations of vodka.

Other than informing you about the drink vodka itself, the museum has displays on the traditional Russian drinking cup known as the charka and the various types of drinking establishments such as the kabaks (drinking houses) and tractirs (restaurants).

The Vodka Museum is conveniently located near Izmaylovo Market, Moscow's biggest souvenir and traditional crafts market. The museum houses a restaurant or 'tractir' serving traditional foods and there's a souvenir shop.
